AULA 4 (From October 21st to 25th)

According to the main foundational principles of language pedagogy presented in H. D. Brown's Chapter 4, which three principles out of the twelve discussed by the author would you prioritize in your teaching? Explain the reasons for each one of them.

  1. The twelve principles of second language learning, that form a core of an approach to a language teaching, according to Brown are fit in three boundaries, that are: Cognitive Principles, Affective Principles and Linguistic Principles. Based on the reading of these principles, the three ones that I think that must be prioritized in the teaching process are the Meaningful Learning (Cognitive Principle), Self-Confidence (Affective Principle) and the Communicative Competence (Linguistic Principle). The Meaningful Learning that consists in lead the learner toward a better long-term retention, is the a useful manner to appealing the learner's interest through techniques that focus on the language and its practice use, without the mechanic use of the grammar explanation or drilling. This principle deal with what is relevant in the student's daily. Self-Confidence is necessary to a success in second language learning, because it works like a booster to the student's decisions and even to develop other principles, like Risk-Taking. Therefore, behooves to the teacher helps to build the student's self-confidence, for instance, beginning through simpler techniques and gradually more difficult. Communicative Competence, this must be the goal of language classroom, enable the learner the capacity of communication, give some attention both the grammar and the pragmatic.

  3. THE LANGUAGE -CULTURE CONNECTION, because it is always important for students to compare the contents with the culture studied, since the English culture, in the case is linked directly to their daily lives, such as through músicas.SELF-CONFIDENCE because is very important for students to feel self-confident and able to carry out the tasks proposed by the teacher, especially by stimulating the development of self-esteem of each um.MEANINGFUL LEARNING will lead the students toward better long term retention than rote learning, because students need to learn and not to decorate, since they are probably preparing for the future in order to be approved in vestibular tests, competitions and more.

  5. In the cognitive aspect that is related to mental and intellectual functions, I think the second principle the Meaninful Learning is as relevant as it guides the student to a longer retention than rote learning of the word.
In the affective aspect I believe that Strategic Investment can unite a little of each of the principles, because we have to use multiple strategies so that we can achieve our goal by giving attention to the needs of each student but taking into account the group.
In the linguistic aspect that is related to the complex linguistic system I believe is the main purpose of studying a foreign language is to acquire communicative competence, so that the principle is the most appropriate Communicative Competence.

  6. The Anticipation of Reward: because this is to motivate students. This can be done in several ways. One is that students try to see the future rewards of that learning, in this case, the acquisition of English, showing the prestige of being able to speak English, learn English for academic benefits, jobs that require language.
Intrinsic motivation: with this principle it is possible to work out the intrinsic reasons of the students. The activities have a chance of success in that they are motivated from the standpoint of the student. They carry out the tasks because they are fun, interesting, useful and challenging not only because they are obliged to do.
The Language-culture Connection: because this principle is important to discuss cultural differences emphasizing that no culture is better than another, it’s just different. And working with materials and activities that illustrate the connection between language and culture.

  7. Among the twelve principles of learning a second language, I think the Meaning of Learning (Cognitive Principle) is of great importance to student learning, to attract the interest by careful academic goals based on abstract principles and theories.
Language Ego (Affective Principle) is important because it is a principle which is based on affection that facilitates the learning process where students lose their fear of speaking.
Another principle of fundamental importance is the Communicative Competence (Principle language) that focuses on a number of meanings in organizational skills, pragmatic, strategic and psychomotor. All they motivate the student's interest because the main focus on the needs of second language student.

  8. THE LANGUAGE CULTURE CONNECTION -because learning a language means learning about a culture that too. When we teach a language, also teach a complex system of cultural customs, values, way of thinking, feeling and acting. As students adapt to a new cultural environment will affect their success in acquiring anew language.
STRATEGIC INVESTMENT - Because the methods used by learner to internalize and to perform in the language are important as the teacher's methods or the more so. The success of a second language depends on the personal investment of time, effort, and attention in the form of a sequence of strategies to understand and produce the language.
COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE – because communicative competence is the goal of a language class.

  9. The Self-Confidence is a very important principle to be worked in class. Because the teacher is always motivating the student, giving him confidence, and making him believe how much he is capable of learn. And it's this confidence that will contribute to student’s success in acquisition a second language.
The Meaningful Learning, because to make sense to the student at the time of learning providing better retention of content.
And the Communicative Competence, because this principle addresses the study of language in use and not as decontextualized system, arousing the attention and interest of the student to learn.

  10. Strategic Investment, this principle is given priority because in a classroom there are students with different learning styles, so this principle is based on the fact that the teacher use various teaching strategies to achieve the styles of each student. Another very important principle is the Language Ego, a principle of the affective field, here the student must be motivated and the teacher must be sensitive enough to know how to call the student's attention, and know when and how to correct him. The next principle is Risk-Taking, in that principle the teacher needs to encourage the student. Risk taking is one the big qualities of a confident person. Risk exists because things considered to have value are placed at risk and as such the failures of risk concerns the interaction of people in their environment.

  11. Among the twelve principles of learning HD Brown, the three that I consider most important in teaching and learning are: Meaningful learning where the student acquires its long-term knowledge, taking things even his routine as a source of learning, especially for children who are early in their school life for them becomes simpler, since they are easy to assemble, sounds, pictures, things of everyday life, with what was taught in school. Self-confidence, because when the student feels confident he allows himself to get new things, not afraid of making mistakes, which is a very important pair of L2 student, and Communicative Competence, because it works with the grammar, strategies, skills psychomotor important to student learning a foreign language.

  12. THE LANGUAGE, CULTURE CONNECTION, is important because through this principle, the student will have the basis for context and usefully assimilate the content studied
THE SELF-CONFIDENCE, it is very necessary because when there is a barrier to learning. The student is afraid of being ridiculed by peers and there can not learn.
THE COMPETENCE communicative, and self-confidence the student is ready to contextuakizar what you have learned more dynamic and it is essential to a quality learning.

  13. In view of the three aspects, in the cognitive aspect to consider how important meaningful learning, being that it guides the student in the right direction, without the use of grammatical explanation for the vested interest that Awaken through techniques of language and its use; in the affective aspect consider important strategic investment, or should pay attention to the individual needs of each student, but without forgetting that it is part of a group, consider in the important aspect of linguistic communicative competence, the student should be ready to contextualize the he learned from his clear and precise knowledge of grammar.

  14. Before the approach of the principles would apply
The first language-culture connection, because when you asssocia the cultural context of the student with the lessons, the learning becomes easier, because students learn from their own reality. comparisons not only of their culture, but the differences with the student culture of other countries.

    Intrinsic Motivation
when you have a tecchiques to motivate your students learning will be faster and more responsive.
    Communicative Competence
extremely important works communicative competence in the classroom, since it involves skills that will be learned by students, and get some combinations: as grammatical and discourse and others.

  15. Three principles that must prioritized in the teaching process are:a)intrinsic motivation,b)meaningful learning:According to Brown meaningful learning will guide the student for a longer retention than mecanic learning of the word,c)self - confidence.

  16. I find it very difficult to choose the face, because all models are very involved, and what has to be taken into account, I think, is the target audience. But as I have to express my opinion, I choose the communicative competence by its context, the display language and objectivity; LANGUAGE EGO (which Brown also called "Warm and fuzzy") that has everything to do with the emotions of the student. In a class of adult education for example, has all sorts of cognitive behaviors receptive, and you tend to work with a special way and can not develop these, learning the language. And to conclude I would choose their own intrinsic motivation that is essential and there by itself, out of any convention.

  17. INTRINSIC MOTIVATION, because is in evidence the action and the interaction of the person and the environment. MEANINGFUL LEARNING, because in this principle the new knowledge acquire relate to prior knowledge that the student has. SELF-CONFIDENCE, because important we work the self-confidence of our students. It is important that people are comfortable and confident doing any activity.

  18. Self confidence- Because of its high self-esteem students will feel more confident to participate in class and therefore more motivated about learning the L2. The Risk-taking- Because this method aims to encourage students to actively participate in the proposed activities through the support and guidance of the teacher, it takes students to become more involved in activities to practice the L2. The important thing is that they have contact with the foreign language and learn by practicing. Automaticy - Because it is a method where the student has the opportunity to learn a foreign language almost automatically through an inductive method of exposure to language, students need to be placed in situations where they can solve tasks related to the target language. In this case the teacher will have a key role in the selection of strategies that can lead students to achieve the proposed objectives with respect to L2.

  19. Socorro Sousa disse: In my opinion, the three more important principles of language pedagogy are:

In first place COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE, that when the teacher should pay attention to practice various techniques and not get corrected all the time orally the student, because these errors can be corrected in other opportunities, like people say: It's when you make mistakes, that you learn more.

The second is: INTRISIC MOTIVATION,’ cause I think that is necessary that each student has some motivation to learn, and this can and should be encouraged by the teacher.

And the last is THE LANGUAGE –CULTURE CONNECTION, cause it’s much important to know (even just a little) the culture of the people that you are studying, to bring to you even more of these people and facilitate your learning.

  20. Antonio Juniel disse: Among several principles firstly I choose principle 4 Intrinsic Motivation because is important to motive students second language about importance learning foreign language, because this principle chance of success is much greater, cause learners see the learning of second language fun, interesting and useful. After reading more I choose principle 9, The Language culture Interconnection, because this principle over there to teach a second language, We can teach also about of culture of the speakers of the foreign language doing a background of the culture, making the lesson more interesting, working also aspects sociolinguistics and the conhection among language and culture. The Next that I choose was principle 10, The Native Language Effect, because is important have in consideration the native language of the learners to understand the second language that is being taught. where the teacher can teach the learners to think directly in the target language and help to avoid the first language “crutch” syndrome, which is much common when students are beginning to learn a second language.

  21. intrinsic motivation - because it takes into account the dynamic learning where the teacher considers the knowledge acquired by students in their daily lives, that is the knowledge of the world.
strategic investment, due to heterogeneity of the classroom, students with different personalities have to know the professsor use their tools, so it requires a good teacher training (qualification).
ego-teacher being able to detect the specific characteristics of students, and once found these differences to be able to act on them.

  22. I think the principle main is the Automaticity. According with Brown “through a inductive process of exposure to language input and opportunity to experiment with output, they appear to learner language without “thinking” about them. So this principle act of a form relaxed in the leaner’s mind making them “no think” in the rules of grammar that already are included in the subconscious because of the peripheral attention that they acquired about the language forms. I guess this principle is interesting because it is so practical and take the leaner to accelerate his process of learning through the automaticity. This process does the leaner feel himself that “jumped the boring part” in the learning process, been that indeed he only “no released” that learned. No doubt this process is rather useful and deserves to be regarded.

  23. Julio Cesar disse: For me the most important three principles are:
1 - Meaningful Learning - the student must be within a teaching process that give him the possibility of critical comprehension and domain of all the cognitive factors.
2 – The language and culture-. Although of the English language having lost cultural identity, we can learn a lot it through of the American culture expressed through music in movies, games and more.
3 - Self confidence - develops the motivation and it does the student to search the learning of languages even if he does not have access to the best method of teaching.

  24. Isla Rafaela disse: THE LANGUAGE CULTURE CONNECTION: Is important the students know a little of the culture to obtain good results in learning.

THE SELF CONFIDENCE: Is important that students have self confidence in learning, because it is a motivation to learning and the studens feel safety.

STRATEGIC INVESTIMENT: The teachers must know how to use differents strategics according to each kind of situation.

  25. Among the author`s principles I priorize Intrisic Motivation because the teachers need to have the capacity to invent differents manners of learning and Intrisic Motivation are connected with Seelf Confidence, because the learners need to have Self Confidence, they need believe in themselves and the teaches get to supportthem making use of the Language Culture Connection this principles make easier the learning of the Commnicative competence.

  26. Maria de Fátima disse: The teaching of the English language requires preparation by the teacher, because this is partly responsible for the success of the language learning and teaching. Thus, it’s necessary the use of the methods that will facilitate their education proposal.
In this sense as a student of English, among the many existing methods, I prioritize the followings: Meaningful Learning, Risk-Taking and The Native Language Effect, believing that these are appropriate ways to achieve good results in the English language teaching. The first one is important because it is also utilized techniques designed to awaken the students’ interests. The second one seeks to emerge in the students the desire for knowledge of the language encouraging them to take risks in search of knowledge. The third one purpose is to help students to deal with the difficulties existing between the native language and the target language.
